What to do in the garden, season by season
Gardening feels much easier when you know what the current season is asking of you. Use these lists as a starting point and adjust to your own climate and frost dates.
Spring Gardening
Spring is about preparation and planting. Work when the soil is workable rather than sodden — squeezing a handful should crumble, not smear.
- Clear winter debris and top beds with compost
- Start warm-season seeds indoors where the season is short
- Direct sow cool-season crops such as lettuce, radishes and carrots
- Wait until frost risk has passed before planting tomatoes, peppers and beans
- Set up supports and trellises before plants need them
Summer Gardening
Summer is maintenance season. The garden mostly needs water, mulch, and regular picking to keep producing.
- Water deeply in the early morning rather than lightly every day
- Top up mulch to hold moisture and slow weeds
- Harvest beans, zucchini and herbs frequently
- Pinch out or tie in tall plants as they grow
- Check pots daily — they dry out far faster than beds
Fall Gardening
Fall gives you a second planting window and the best chance to improve soil for next year while it is still warm.
- Sow quick cool-season greens and salad crops
- Plant spring-flowering bulbs before the ground gets cold
- Clear spent plants and compost healthy material
- Spread compost or leaf mold over empty beds
- Bring tender herbs indoors before the first hard frost
Winter Gardening
Winter is quiet outdoors and useful indoors. It is the best time to plan, tidy, and get equipment ready.
- Sketch next year's beds and rotate where crops will go
- Order seeds early while choice is good
- Grow herbs on a bright windowsill
- Clean, sharpen and oil hand tools
- Protect containers from freezing and check drainage
