How to grow cosmos
Airy, generous and happy in poor soil.
Overview
Cosmos produce clouds of daisy-like flowers on tall, fine stems. Unusually, they flower best in lean soil — rich ground and heavy feeding produce lush foliage and few blooms.
Common problems and what to do
Tall plants flopping
Common in rich soil or windy sites. Support with twiggy sticks or grow shorter varieties.
Leaves but no flowers
Too much nitrogen. Stop feeding entirely.
Slow start in cold soil
Wait for warmth rather than sowing early.
Harvesting
Cut as flowers open; regular cutting and deadheading extends the display well into fall.
Beginner tips
- Sow direct — cosmos grow fast and dislike being pot-bound.
- Let a few flowers set seed and they often self-sow next year.
- Perfect filler between vegetables and shrubs.
