How to grow green beans
Reliable, generous and beginner-proof.
Overview
Green beans are among the easiest vegetables to grow from seed. Bush beans need no support and crop in a concentrated flush; pole beans climb, use vertical space, and produce over a longer period.
Common problems and what to do
Poor germination
Cold or waterlogged soil rots seed. Wait for warmth and avoid over-watering before shoots appear.
Flowers but no pods
Often extreme heat during flowering. Keep plants watered and wait for temperatures to ease.
Tough, stringy pods
Left on the plant too long. Pick younger and more often.
Harvesting
Pick when pods are pencil-thick and snap cleanly. Harvest every couple of days — leaving mature pods signals the plant to stop.
Beginner tips
- Sow a second batch a few weeks after the first for a longer season.
- Do not soak seed for long periods; it can cause rot.
- Pole beans are the better choice when ground space is tight.
