How to grow zucchini
One healthy plant can produce generously.
Overview
Zucchini can be highly productive in warm weather. For a first garden, start with one healthy plant and add more only if you have the space and want a larger harvest. Give it room, sun, and steady water.
Common problems and what to do
Tiny fruit that rots at the tip
Usually unpollinated. Hand-pollinate in the morning or plant flowers nearby to draw in insects.
Powdery mildew late in summer
Common and rarely fatal. Improve airflow, water at the base, and remove the worst leaves.
Oversized, seedy fruit
A missed harvest. Check under leaves every day or two — fruit hides.
Harvesting
Cut when fruit is 6–8 in (15–20 cm) long and the skin is still tender. Frequent picking keeps production going.
Beginner tips
- Male flowers appear first and set no fruit — this is normal, not a failure.
- Mulch well; large leaves lose a lot of moisture.
- Start with one plant unless you know you want a large harvest.
