Overview
Marigolds are tough, heat-tolerant annuals that flower relentlessly from early summer to frost. Their neat size makes them a popular edging plant along vegetable beds and paths.
Common problems and what to do
Fewer flowers over time
Spent blooms left on the plant slow new ones. Deadhead regularly.
Leggy, floppy growth
Too little light or too much feeding. Move to full sun and stop feeding.
Gray mold on flowers in wet weather
Remove affected blooms and improve spacing for airflow.
Harvesting
Deadhead continuously; cut stems for small posies as flowers open fully.
Beginner tips
- Pinch young plants once to encourage bushier growth.
- Excellent in pots and along bed edges where they are easy to deadhead.
- Very forgiving of hot, dry, exposed spots.
