How to grow parsley
Slow to start, then reliable for months.
Overview
Parsley germinates slowly — often two to four weeks — which catches people out. Once growing, it is one of the steadiest herbs, producing for a full season and often into a second year.
Common problems and what to do
Seed that never comes up
Usually impatience or a dry seedbed. Keep it damp and allow up to four weeks.
Yellowing lower leaves
Often dryness or exhausted soil in a pot. Water more evenly and feed lightly.
Flowering in year two
Parsley is biennial — it flowers and sets seed in its second year. Start fresh plants each spring.
Harvesting
Cut outer stems at the base and let the center keep producing.
Beginner tips
- Flat-leaf types generally have a stronger flavor than curly ones.
- It tolerates cool weather well and often carries on into winter.
- Grow in a deep pot — parsley has a substantial taproot.
