How to grow lettuce
The quickest way to eat something you grew.
Overview
Lettuce is a cool-season crop that goes from seed to salad in a few weeks. Loose-leaf varieties can be picked repeatedly, making them far more productive than a single head for the same space.
Common problems and what to do
Bolting
Heat makes plants run to seed and turn bitter. Sow in cooler weather and choose slow-to-bolt varieties.
Slug and snail damage
Ragged holes overnight. Water in the morning rather than evening and check under leaves and pot rims.
Bitter leaves
Usually heat or age. Harvest younger and keep the soil evenly moist.
Harvesting
For leaf types, pick the outer leaves and leave the center to keep growing. For heads, cut at the base when firm.
Beginner tips
- Sow a short row every two to three weeks for a continuous supply.
- Harvest in the cool of the morning for crisper leaves.
- Lettuce grows well in shallow, wide containers.
