Vegetable
How to grow radishes
Sown one weekend, eaten a few weeks later.
Overview
Radishes are the fastest common vegetable, often ready within a month. That speed makes them a brilliant confidence builder and a good crop to grow with children, and they can be tucked between slower plants.
Common problems and what to do
All leaves, no root
Overcrowding, too little light, or too much nitrogen. Thin properly and avoid rich feeds.
Split roots
Left in the ground too long, or watered erratically. Harvest promptly.
Overly hot flavor
Heat and age. Grow in the cooler parts of the year and pick young.
Harvesting
Pull as soon as roots reach full size — usually three to five weeks after sowing.
Beginner tips
- Sow small amounts every two weeks rather than one large batch.
- Use them to mark rows of slow-germinating crops like carrots.
- The leaves are edible when young.
