How to grow thyme
Low, tough and drought-tolerant.
Overview
Thyme is a low, spreading perennial that thrives on neglect in sunny, well-drained spots. It works beautifully at the front of a bed, along path edges, or spilling over the rim of a pot.
Common problems and what to do
Dying out in the middle
Natural with age. Trim after flowering and replace plants every few years.
Rot in wet soil or heavy mulch
Keep the crown clear and improve drainage with grit.
Weak flavor
Too much water and feeding. Thyme concentrates flavor when grown lean.
Harvesting
Trim sprigs any time, ideally before flowering when the flavor is strongest.
Beginner tips
- Plant at the edge of a pot so it trails.
- A light shear after flowering keeps it dense.
- It handles heat and dry spells better than almost any other herb.
