How to grow rosemary
Sun, grit, and very little water.
Overview
Rosemary is an evergreen Mediterranean shrub that can live for many years. It asks for almost nothing except sun and drainage, and dies quickly in soggy soil.
Common problems and what to do
Sudden browning and death
Usually root rot from overwatering or heavy soil. Improve drainage before replacing the plant.
Bare, woody stems
Trim lightly and often. Rosemary does not reliably reshoot from old bare wood.
Struggling indoors
Indoor rosemary needs the brightest window available and careful, sparing watering.
Harvesting
Snip soft green tips as needed year-round; heavier trimming is best after flowering.
Beginner tips
- Terracotta pots suit it perfectly.
- Trim little and often rather than one hard cut.
- It pairs well with lavender and thyme in the same dry, sunny bed.
