How to grow mint

Overview
Mint is a perennial that spreads by underground runners and will take over a bed given the chance. Grown in a container it is one of the easiest and most useful herbs you can keep.
Common problems and what to do
Taking over the bed
Runners travel underground. Keep mint in a container, on a hard surface if possible.
Rust-colored spots underneath leaves
Remove affected growth, improve airflow, and cut the plant back hard to regrow clean.
Sparse, woody growth
Old, congested roots. Divide and repot into fresh mix every year or two.
Harvesting
Cut whole stems back by about a third rather than picking single leaves; it regrows quickly.
Beginner tips
- Cut it back hard mid-season for a flush of fresh growth.
- Different varieties taste noticeably different — try more than one.
- Never plant it directly in a mixed herb bed.
